Family Therapy
What is Family Therapy?
Family therapy can be a transformative experience for families navigating complex dynamics and challenges. This therapeutic approach provides a safe space for open communication, allowing family members to express their feelings and concerns in a supportive environment. Often, issues such as communication breakdowns, unresolved conflicts, or shifts in family roles can lead to misunderstandings and emotional distress. Family therapy helps to address these issues, fostering a deeper understanding of each member's perspectives and feelings, which can ultimately strengthen relationships.
At Daru, Erin works with families with teens, young adults and/or adult children. Appointments are structured so that each person is given the chance to share their feelings and perspectives. This includes ongoing coaching on effective communication, listening, and development of emotional vocabulary. Clients can opt to meet individually with Erin for their initial session, and then come together for family work.
What does Family Therapy look like?
Family therapy participants can expect openness and transparency from Erin throughout the process. Clients in standard family therapy will be asked to agree to a "no secrets" policy, where they agree that the therapist will not keep a secret that is relevant to the work from another member of the family unit participating in therapy, even when someone contacts the therapist out of session. For this reason, we encourage family members to also seek independent therapy of their own from another associate.
What will we get out of it?
Family therapy can equip families with effective coping strategies and conflict-resolution skills. Through guided discussions and activities, our therapists can help families identify patterns of behavior that may be contributing to their difficulties. By learning to communicate more effectively and empathize with one another, families can create a more supportive home environment and learn to share space in a safe and healthy way. This collaborative approach not only enhances individual well-being but also promotes unity and resilience within the family unit, making it a valuable resource for those seeking to improve their family dynamics.
